I grow arborvitaes for many years, this is what you should know!
It is easy to buy arborvitaes for a quick privacy hedge in the garden. Arborvitaes are relatively fast growing, not really expensive and are evergreen - what more to desire from a privacy hedge, especially in a busy suburban environment?
Well, can we plant arborvitaes in part shade? And what to expect from them if you do that?
Let's talk!
Enjoy!

    This was helpful. I planted rose shrubs last year and this is the first time i’ve pruned after blooming (NE Ohio). Hearing “you dictate how it grows” is exactly what i needed to hear! I also find the plant tells you when it needs maintenance.

    With regards to weeds I agree, my garden also is very full and theres simply no room for weeds to grow, makes it very easy. Also heavily leaf-mulched from the previous season is a good preventative measure for weeds. Thats great you have a source of free water, I have 4 x 275 Gall tanks taking water off the roofs and with a simple pump system makes watering a breeze. It really is nice when the garden gets filled out, if its all perennials I personally find its not that much "hard" work at that point, just maintenance and enjoyment.

    Thank you for explaining that Olga. I was looking at the David Austin website yesterday and noticed that as well. Thank you very much.

    Hi Olga. I started to use a Neem oil mixture to control the Red Lily beetle that has become such a nuisance in North America. I now use it on all my rose bush cultivars: Hybrid Tea, Floribunda, Bush, Polyantha, Morden, etc. I'm hoping that it will prevent the many rose bush diseases this year. Today I discovered something has been eating my various Coneflower cultivars. I will try to Neem oil on them too. Could Neen oil be the 'magic bullet' for all garden plants? Je pense que oui. Thanks for your wonderful video tutorial.

    I know that many folks used to be skeptical of growing arborvitie because of severe bagg worm infestations. Do you ever have problems with the bagg worm. I am a fan of the beautiful giant green thuja,used as a landscape wind break. At maturity they make such a grand showing.

    This is very helpful. It’s often hard to find info on what plants look like when grown in different conditions. The tags and info on nursery websites will just say “full sun” or whatever but it’s hard to know what the growth will look like in less sun. Will it be leggy and scraggly? Or will it just grow more slowly? Etc. So this was helpful to see.

    Beautiful arborvitae, Olga! Question for you or anyone in the chat...my full sun arborvitae are brown inside, but they are green just like Olga's on the outside. Is this normal? Thank you in advance! Happy gardening! 🌱

    • @kaitlinjohnson2915
      @kaitlinjohnson2915 6 дней назад

      Yes, the insides get shaded and the foliage dies back. That’s normal. Just be aware that they often don’t sprout new growth from bare wood, so if you prune it back too far, it might not recover and you will have a bare spot.

    I think her and I could talk gardening as she does and says many things I do. Yes, things are 2 weeks early and I looked back and the Mock Orange and catalpa are two weeks early. It ruined the lovely scent of both because the heat wasn’t quite here and the large amount of rain in WI wasn’t good. I bought a new lawnmower awhile back and laughed when I seen the plastic covering hers as my husband did that and the paint took on marks from the sun heating it up. I wonder if she cuts the raspberries to the ground or canes that are 2 years old? Are they Everbearing? It always confuses me. I have blackberries also and wild blackcaps. Very nice gardens! Thx!
